This climbing vine produces pale green flowers that each last only one day and must be hand-pollinated within hours. In the Victorian language of flowers, vanilla orchid means “Sensual warmth and comfort”. The Totonac people of Mexico were the first vanilla cultivators. For 300 years, Mexico held a monopoly because vanilla could only be pollinated by local Melipona bees. In 1841, a 12-year-old enslaved boy named Edmond Albius on Réunion Island discovered the hand-pollination technique still used today.
