Rhododendrons are the aristocrats of the spring garden, large, glossy evergreen leaves providing year-round structure, topped in spring with enormous trusses of flowers in every shade from white through pink, red, purple, orange, and yellow. In their native Himalayan forests, they form entire mountainsides of color at elevations where little else flowers.

The Himalayan species form entire forests at altitude, some tree rhododendrons reach 40 feet with trunks 3 feet across. In the Victorian era, plant hunters risked their lives collecting new species from remote Asian mountains. R. ponticum is now one of Britain's most problematic invasive species.
